Step 02 of 03

Pick the right
place.

The best place to propose is the one that fits the two of you. An adventure couple in a Parisian hotel feels wrong. A luxury couple halfway up a fell feels wrong. Match the place to the couple and you can't miss.

Location Tips

Things to get right.

01

Book private over public

A private terrace, a quiet corner of a viewpoint, a hotel suite. Strangers in your proposal photos ruin them. Pay the extra for privacy.

02

Sunset, not midday

Light is everything for photos and atmosphere. Golden hour (the hour before sunset) makes any location look better. Plan around it.

03

Have a backup for weather

Rain ruins outdoor plans. Always have a plan B that's still good, not just shelter. Hotel suite, a private dining room, the hotel bar.

04

Don't over-engineer it

Flash mobs, drones, fireworks. The internet is full of proposals that try too hard. The best ones are simple. Trust the place, trust the moment, trust her.

05

Tell one person at the destination

Hotel concierge, restaurant manager, photographer. One trusted person on the ground who knows the plan can save you when something goes sideways.

06

Don't pick somewhere you've never been

If you've never visited the location, you don't know what it actually looks like, smells like, sounds like. Use a place you know, or arrive a day early to scout.

Location FAQ

Common questions.

Should I propose somewhere significant to us, or somewhere new?

Both work, neither is wrong. Significant places (where you met, your first holiday) carry meaning by default but might feel underwhelming visually. New places are more impressive but feel less personal. Pick based on her: would she rather feel the emotion of "this place" or the awe of "this view"?

How far in advance should I book?

For Domestic weekends, 2 to 6 weeks is fine. For abroad, 2 to 4 months. For premium hotels in popular destinations (Amalfi, Santorini, Iceland in winter), 6+ months. Earlier means better choice and lower prices.

Is it weird to propose on a trip we'd already planned?

No, it's smart. She won't suspect anything, you save the cost of a separate trip, and you get the proposal without the pressure of justifying a sudden weekend away. The trip can be normal until the moment.

Should I hire a photographer?

Strongly recommend it. The photos last a lifetime, you can't take them yourself, and pros know how to be discreet. Search "proposal photographer + city" on Instagram or Flytographer. Cost is typically A$400 to A$950 for a 30 to 60 minute shoot.

What if she'd rather have been at home?

Honest answer: think hard about what she actually wants, not what you imagine she wants. Some women dream of Paris. Others would cringe at the production. If she's the second type, the kitchen of your own flat is the right answer. The location is for her, not for Instagram.
